When a small animal is threatened it has not so many options. It can run, fight, or give up. These options, instincts are "stored" in the DNA. Humans in a similar situation have multiple choices, and they are to many to store them in the DNA, even if there is plenty of room. Instead humans have stored the instincts in shared stories, fairy tales, mythology.
